I ride a single speed Raleigh road bike, and let me tell you I've come a long way in the last two weeks when it comes to hills! Its amazing how quickly you can gain endurance. At the top I got so excited that I wanted to climb all the buttes in SE, so I made my way over to Kelly butte, and damn, that was a very steep grade! I couldn't do it without gears so I thought oh well Im going anyway! So I carried by crappy bike all the way to the top, then using mountain bike trails I made my way down the other side (carrying the bike, slipping thru muck). Very desolate with a cool water reservoir. Nobody at all was up there. I broke my chain on my way to Powell Butte. Thank god for Tri-Met.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3128989420286723021.post-49465909227253500792011-05-08T21:42:34.063-07:002011-05-08T21:42:34.063-07:00ABC always has a good light selection! It does no good to have the second lane open when it's being filled by a biker. Ankeny is a block over, and yeah you have to jog around a little, and there's a large hill by Laurelhurst park, but that's just part of it. There's biker highways for a reason. I lived on 60th for a year and had to bike that route, it wasn't the easiest as I'm not in the best shape, but come on people. There needs to be mutual respect between cars and bikes, and biking on Burnside is just selfish in my opinion.Kristinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11190210055377180985noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3128989420286723021.post-46890670456336228182010-08-18T17:11:34.083-07:002010-08-18T17:11:34.083-07:00I like your little flyer if that is what it is. I know she travels down Holgate and then over to Center, Gladstone, 26th to Ladds and then over to Hawthorne and into downtown. That's usually our route as well for shopping at People's. But when I head over to the upper Hawthorne area or Divison to ABC or Ptown Scooters (I ride mopeds with Aaron) I take the 205 path to Division and then cut over to Woodward and then Clinton.

"Bright Lights Save Lives"
JeremieJeremiehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14573879100979441543noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3128989420286723021.post-69985558367063317602010-07-31T12:42:10.266-07:002010-07-31T12:42:10.266-07:00If you're near people's coop heading to Se...If you're near people's coop heading to Sellwood, it's a much more reliable idea to ride over to 26th & then down to Bybee into Sellwood , so as to avoid the greater possibility of death flying past you at 50mph .

& I'm fairly certain that cycling should not be about the convenience as much as the experience . So as someone who...Okay. this is a valid question. So as someone who occasionally rides on Powell and MLK I will offer a response. I've ridden in Portland for 7 years now and know the whole city in terms of what areas are good and what areas aren't. I've even started my own Google map of good bike routes which is superior to the 'bikethere' map. 90% of the time I'm on roads like Clinton, Tillamook, etc. But there are a few reasons I wont. If I'm headed south from Tillamook and Rodney, there's no more efficient route than MLK and going south I can keep a good pace (going north I'll often take the sidewalk). On Powell there are two places that I might ride. If I'm going from People's coop area and I have to get to Sellwood or the Ross Island bridge it's less out of my way to take Powell under the rail bridge. Otherwise I might take Powell east of 80th ave where alternative routes are harder to come by. Sometimes I'll also take 2-lane Division because I often pull a heavy trailer between Harrison & 44th and Woodstock. It's less hilly to take Division to 60th to get to Woodward than to climb the hill at 51st.
Certainly there are other people who are just unaware of bike routes. But for me I take it when it's the most (or the only) convenient routeAaronhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16105161802971411590noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3128989420286723021.post-22083649491996766422010-07-31T08:05:23.379-07:002010-07-31T08:05:23.379-07:00Jeremie, I looked up the Lents Farmers market on L...Jeremie, I looked up the Lents Farmers market on LocalHarvest.org. We may sell both our vehicles and just use our bikes, (keeping the mopeds though). We bought the Burley trailer designed for hauling a pet. Our 60lb. German Shepherd fits just fine. Then I realized that the trailer would be great for hauling groceries. So now I haul it down to People's Co-Op and to Lents farmers Market.
